Compact Community

Ed Chelsea Rimando

The concept of well-being and empowering the local and global communities are one of the concerns especially on today’s current global situation. This project aims to develop a design strategy that will benefit the community of Somers Town. Therefore, the designer’s approach involves social engagement considering having a healthy yet practical living. Community kitchen in a local pub is one of the main strategy of the designer while its basic ingredients will be produce on the adjacent site courtyard. Through this positive activities, it reduces social isolation and able to connect the communities with their green spaces.

As for the design, the designer used Andrea Zittel’s philosophy as a design inspiration “compact + simplicity.” Since Chalton Garden project also tackles interior space using a flat in St. Joan’s Building in the same area, the philosophy is also applied in order to improve the living condition of the existing resident in a more efficient way.
